Pretty good for the Algorithm last weekend getting 4 out of 4 correct. The Crusaders got a big win, the Jaguares make the semi finals for the first time in their history and the Hurricanes did just enough to win at home.
Below are the predictions for the semi finals of Super Rugby 2019.
The Jaguares made history by making the semi finals for the first time ever after winning at home against a strong Chiefs outfit. The Jaguares will be happy to be at home again for the semi final against the Brumbies who finished top of the Australian conference.
The Brumbies played at home against the Sharks and won by a big margin, 38-13. The Sharks never looked in the game, and the Brumbies were dominant throughout. Are the Australian side peaking at just the right time?
We have had a look at the previous matches against these two sides.
Only 3 games played between the two sides as the Jaguares are still reasonably new to Super Rugby. The Jaguares have won the last two in a row however, on both home and away soil. Can they make it three on the trot?
Their home record is certainly good enough to suggest they might, winning 7 from 9 this year in Super Rugby, beating an impressive array of opponents and really making Buenos Aires an imposing place to visit.
And the Brumbies? Well their away record hasn’t been great this year, only winning 3 away games. However, they appeared to be improving as the season progressed and finished with two strong away wins at the close of the season. However, it is worth noting they lost last time out in Argentina, losing 20-15 to the Jaguares back in April.
The Algorithm has the Jaguares to win by 5 again. However, this could be a tight game with the Brumbies on a bit of a high as previously mentioned. There could be an upset on the cards here, certainly don’t write the Brumbies off just yet.
The Crusaders … at home. What a daunting task ahead for the men from the NZ capital. The Hurricanes lost both games in the regular season and will be well aware they need to come out strong to get over the line for this game. So who has the edge? Here are the 2019 stats for each team below:
This is actually looking more even than was expected for 2019. The same amount of wins (12) – 2 draws and 2 losses for the Crusaders while the Hurricanes have had 3 losses and 1 draw. Close stuff.
But here is where it gets really interesting … the Crusaders at home in 2019:
8 wins with only that draw against the Sharks blemishing a perfect run. The last time they played at home against the Hurricanes they won convincingly 38-22.
The Algorithm has the Crusaders to win by 9 this time round. Pretty convincing with the Hurricanes only given around a 1 in 5 chance.
[For those interested, in the last World Cup cycle (2015) the Crusaders didn’t even make the quarters. Below is the Crusaders record in 2015. Almost unthinkable today.]
Both the Hurricanes and Brumbies will need to start strong to plant any doubt in their opponent minds. We think these games will come down to discipline and fine margins with one key play that could break it wide open for either team.
